Feeling a bit better, I set out the rest of the food on the table, figuring someone will eat it. I can’t believe Callan did that for me, even ate with me. His grumpy persona seems to be receding. Making note of where the news crew is, I slip around them to watch the soundcheck. I hoist myself up on one of the crates backstage and lean back on my braced arms to soak it all in.

I love watching Callan out there. He looks so happy. I like seeing him happy. I wonder why he hasn’t been when he’s off the stage. Some people might think he’s putting on an act for the cameras, but I know it’s not. He’s loving it out there. He’s with his friends, he’s doing what he loves, he’s a joy to watch.

He glances over and sees me watching. His smile fades for just a minute, but I grin, he grins back and turns to his friends.

A little sizzle runs through me, not for the first time. He doesn’t have Jase’s movie star looks or Oliver’s sex appeal, but there is something about him out there, something about his enjoyment, his confidence, and yeah, his voice.

“You have a good voice,” I say when he exits the stage in my direction, which surprises me because he usually heads the other way. “Why don’t you ever sing lead?”

He stares at me as if I’ve just started speaking Russian or something. “Nah, I don’t like that much attention.”

“That’s a really weird thing for a rock star to say.” I fall into step beside him. “You write songs, though.”

“Ah, yeah, for Oliver to sing.”

Some of my favorite songs are one he’s written. “Would Oliver let you sing them if you wanted?”

Again he gives me that look. “We’re not a dictatorship.”

“Well, good, but would he?”

“We’re also not The Eagles or something. People have expectations of the band, and one of those is Oliver’s voice.”

“Then come sing with me.” I don’t know where that came from. I just—watching him just now opened up something in me that I want to explore.

“What about your band?” He motions to the guys getting onto the bus.

“We are a dictatorship,” I tease, jumping up onto the first step and looking down at him. “Be ready tonight. I’m gonna call you out.”
